RPTFE Gasket Selection Guide: Key Factors and Practical Advice

RPTFE (filled polytetrafluoroethylene) gaskets are the sealant of choice in the chemical, petroleum, and pharmaceutical industries due to their excellent chemical resistance, low friction coefficient, and wide temperature range (-200°C to +260°C). However, how do you choose the right RPTFE gasket for different operating conditions? The following are key considerations.

1. Chemical Compatibility Prioritized

RPTFE itself is resistant to most chemicals, but filler materials (such as glass fiber, carbon fiber, and graphite) can affect performance. For example, for highly oxidizing media (such as concentrated sulfuric acid), choose RPTFE without carbon fillers; for high-pressure steam environments, models with graphite or bronze powder added for enhanced wear resistance are recommended. Always check the compatibility table for media and fillers.

2. Temperature and Pressure Compatibility

Conventional RPTFE gaskets are suitable for low to medium pressures (≤10 MPa). For high-pressure applications (such as pipe flanges ≥PN25), choose high-density extruded or wire-reinforced versions. Regarding temperature, short-term resistance to 260°C is recommended, but long-term use is recommended to be kept below 200°C. Specialty models with mica or ceramic fillers may be considered for high-temperature applications.

3. Sealing Surface and Tolerance Requirements

Rough flange surfaces (such as cast iron) require softer gaskets. Pure RPTFE or models with PTFE micropowder provide a better fit. For smooth stainless steel flanges, high-rebound composite filler gaskets can be used. Furthermore, standards such as ASME B16.21 have strict regulations on gasket dimensional tolerances, ensuring compatibility with flange standards (such as DN/PN or ANSI).

4. Certification and Compliance

The food and pharmaceutical industries require FDA or USP Class VI certified gaskets. Nuclear power or high-purity gas systems require low outgassing properties (such as pure RPTFE or models with barium sulfate). Be sure to request material certification and test reports when purchasing.

Summary: The selection of RPTFE gaskets requires a comprehensive assessment of the media, temperature, pressure, and flange conditions. Prioritize consulting the supplier for sample testing. The right choice can not only extend the seal life, but also avoid the risk of leakage.
